Instant Storytelling in the Family, Classroom, or Library

When a child grows up without hearing family stories, she enters adulthood with an incomplete sense of her personal history. This is loss enough. But when a child grows up without hearing folktales and fairytales, she enters adulthood with an imperfect sense of what it means to be a member of the human family. — Carmen Deedy, Social Studies in the Storytelling Classroom (Parkhurst Bros, 2012)

 Children need stories – they need to hear them and they need to tell them – in order to be full-fledged members of the human family.  In this fast-paced, hands-on workshop, you’ll participate in a wide variety of story games and story activities that are guaranteed to get the stories flowing at home, in the library, in the classroom – even in the car!

We’ll explore

  • fun and successful ways to help parents and grandparents rediscover and tell their stories;
  • intriguing strategies for helping children learn to create satisfying stories with beginning, middle, and end, and practice comprehension skills such as predicting and inferring;
  • laughter-provoking games that require creative thinking and imagination while developing understanding of cause-and-effect;
  • and much more.

Join the fun and learn how to engage kids in the amazing world of Story!

Kids develop vocabulary, critical thinking, problem-solving, predict-and-infer, cause-and-effect, and narrative skills as they laugh and play. Lots to Tale-abrate!

Building Blocks of Literacy Parent Workshop Parents will explore relevant early-childhood research and its practical applications, engaging in demonstrations and discussions that put theory into practice. This fun-filled, fast-paced, hands-on workshop will bring out the natural storyteller in each person as they discover creative and effective ways to use voice, body language, gestures and facial expression to bring stories to life effectively for young listeners.
